Partnering for Real Environmental Impact
1% for the Planet is a global movement that inspires businesses to commit 1% of their annual revenue to approved non-profit environmental causes, ensuring their impact is meaningful, measurable, and ongoing.
As an official 1% for the Planet Environmental Partner, Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is now one of the organisations that businesses can directly support through this programme.
If you’re keen to partner with us and help ensure the 730 native species within our sanctuary continue to thrive for generations to come, please get in touch to learn more via the link below.
How It Works
1% for the Planet operates on a direct giving model.
This means:
Businesses partner directly with environmental organisations like Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari
Donations go straight to where they make an impact
1% for the Planet acts as a certifier, connector, and amplifier, not a funding intermediary
Flexible Giving Options
Businesses can tailor their commitment in a way that suits their organisation:
1% of total company revenue
1% of a specific brand or product line
1% from selected products or campaigns
This flexibility allows businesses to align giving with their operations while creating authentic, visible impact.
Recognition & Certification
At Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, we recognise and acknowledge every contribution. Support can include:
Financial donations
In-kind support (products, services, volunteering)
Approved promotional partnerships
All contributions are formally acknowledged with:
Donation receipts
Signed letters of acknowledgment
Proof of contribution
This documentation enables businesses to verify and certify their giving through the 1% for the Planet Certification Team.
Case Study: Auckland based IT firm, Brightly
"We support Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari as part of our 1% for the Planet commitment because meaningful impact works at two levels, systemic change, and action you can see and feel on the ground. Nature-based solutions are well proven; what's harder to put into words is the experience of standing inside a thriving ecosystem, mature native trees, the ngāhere alive with birdsong, streams running with fish and kōura.
Maungatautari makes the case for itself, and we strongly encourage you to visit and feel it with all of your senses. Through supporting Maungataurari our team at Brightly can see tangible results and gain a deeper understanding of what using business as a force for good looks like.”

We were a group of 8, Sue was our guide. Would so recommend having Sue to guide. We would not have noticed or learnt anything by ourselves, noticed birds and plants with understanding the importance of sanctuary. Will be bringing the grandies next.

The team are still absolutely buzzing about their time at Maungatautari! We all learnt SO much — about Rongoa, about the forest and how different plants can heal our ailments — but also how the forest as a whole can heal our inner-selves too. Everybody took something of great value...

I wanted to email you and tell you how literally amazing our day was and that we were absolutely blown away by the whole experience. You and your team are fantastic. All of the parents who attended raved about the whole day.

A truly spectacular day for me thank you, and trust me I've done some really cool things before but this was right up there. The passion, the pride, the service beyond self and the truly intergenerational and transformational work you and the team have done and are doing is inspirational...

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Because one THANK YOU is not enough! We felt very honoured and privileged to witness the health check and transfer process of two kiwi yesterday. To be so close to our iconic bird was very surreal for many of our team. Many photos were taken and I'm sure...

I'm honestly still smiling after my afternoon on the maunga yesterday, so I had to write and thank you SO MUCH. The team is doing extraordinary work with the whole sanctuary, and to see the kiwi team, volunteers, dogs, it was absolutely amazing. It was very moving to see the kiwi close up....

I've hiked many, many forests around New Zealand, but this one hits differently. You just know you're in as native of an NZ forest as it can get, thanks to the predator-proof fence that takes a lot of work and money to maintain. The forest is alive with the beautiful songs of many...

My wife and I live in Miami and visited Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari during a trip to New Zealand a month ago. Our guide was Jenny. We were very impressed with her sincerity as well as your organization and the success of your work.

If you want to see New Zealand's nocturnal animals, go here. Of course, there are day tours as well as night tours. I went on a night tour and it was great. I was happy to see glow worms, go up to the observatory, and see many stars in the night sky! This is not a zoo, but a conservation...
