Support for Mauri of the Maunga Gala Dinner

The evening was amazing on many levels including: bringing our community together; securing the final funds required to begin the 47km fence modification; and raising the awareness of the Maunga and critically, the Kākāpō recovery programme. Over 390 people gathered, raising over $100,000 to bring the treasured Kākāpō to Maungatautari.

It was incredibly humbling to see so many people come together to support our fundraising efforts. The event was officially opened by Kaumātua Sonny Karena and was followed by a beautiful Waiata Tautoko from mana whenua Ngāti Koroki Kahukura and Ngāti Hauā. BiteLAB made the event possible as presenting partner providing 100% of the food and beverage for the occasion.

Event attendees were treated to a thought-provoking discussion on the intensive survival story of the Kākāpō by Ecologist Professor Jacqueline Beggs from the Department of Conservation’s Kākāpō Recovery Team. Her presentation showed the charisma of this impressive bird and the importance of conserving it as best we can.

Along with Department of Conservation’s Kākāpō Recovery Team and mana whenua Ngāti Korokī Kahukura, Sanctuary Mountain is working closely with Ngāi Tahu to achieve the vision of restoring the mauri of the kākāpō. The plan is to transfer up to ten kākāpō in early in 2023.

The final highlight of the evening was the special announcement that Profile Group Ltd has committed to becoming the Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari Education Centre naming rights partner for three years.

Once a silent holding company, Profile Group has recently been powered up to represent a family of businesses that together, form Aotearoa New Zealand’s only integrated aluminium and glass supply chain for window and door solutions. More familiar brands of the Profile Group Ltd include businesses like APL Window Solutions or consumer brands, First Windows and Doors, Altherm Window Systems and Vantage Aluminium.

The Partnership with the Profile Group has also enabled an Aotearoa New Zealand first, with the first issue and purchase of Biodiversity Units between Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari (the seller) and Profile Group Limited (the buyer). This will enable SMM to raise funds for conservation management from the sale of biodiversity units. This transaction was made possible by Ekos through its new ‘Sustainable Development Units Programme’ developed with funding and support from Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, Trust Waikato, the Wel Energy Trust, and the D.V Bryant Trust.

Ekos is an environmental financing business specialising in nature-based solutions using the domestic and international carbon markets and now the biodiversity markets.

All of these wonderful outcomes are a testament to our community, the many individuals, partners, and groups who continue to contribute to restoration of the Maunga.
