Kokako population in Maungatautari is thriving

7 December 2018

We are delighted to share with you the kokako census on Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari conducted by Ian Flux during September and October 2018.

According to the report:

  • Nineteen (19) territorial pairs were confirmed. A further pair was observed for only 15 minutes so is treated as unconfirmed.
  • Six (6) territorial singles were located, making up a total of 44 confirmed territorial individuals.

The 22 unbanded territorial kokako located suggested good productivity and recruitment. Overall, as a result of further recruitment of previously transferred kokako and productivity, the territorial population grew by 122% during the past 12 months.
