iNaturalist fungi project

iNaturalist fungi project

11 May 2021

With the Autumn rain and humidity, the abundance of fungi has started to show and several rangers and visitors have seen some amazing mushrooms and other fungi over the past couple of months.  If you have an interest in fungi, the best way to help our project is to join iNaturalist!  Once you have a profile you can upload photos when you visit the maunga or upload them later and enter the location manually. Make sure you include photos of the cap, gills and stem including attachment to substrate.

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari has an iNaturalist project that ensures any data entered can be found and collected for our own reporting.  Since using iNaturalist we have logged some 64 species of fungi and the list continues to grow.  iNaturalist is fantastic because even if you have no idea what species you have found, you can tag it as a fungus and let the experts work out the species for you – brilliant!  With some amazing beautiful and unusual species out there, now is the time to go foraging for fungus!
